Plastics bags are made out of crude oil, a fossil resource which is one of the major drivers for climate change when processed. Every year, 1 trillion plastic bags are used – that causes more than 30 million tons of carbondioxide emissions. Plastic bags cannot be degraded naturally and therefor remain in our environment up to 500 years. Unfortunately, only 1 out of 10 plastic bags in the EU enter waste recycling (Deutsche Umwelthilfe e.V. 2015).
"Jute bags nowadays are in fact ecologically damaging cotton bags!"
There are many alternatives, the most popular one are cotton bags, which are misleadingly called “jute bags” in Germany.
Only few know the disastrous consequences of cotton production:
Enormous water consumption, which was one of the causes for the fatal drying-out of the Aral Sea
Genetically modified cotton varieties do not survive without frequent pesticide application which harms the environment
Child labor is widespread in the major cotton production areas such as India, Pakistan and Uzbekistan
However, jute production does not necessarily require synthetic fertilizer and chemical pesticides, creates jobs for the rural poor and contributes significantly to the economic development of Bangladesh. More information about the ecological advantages of jute “here”.
